We've been meaning to catch up with Kutsuyama for a few weeks now, and we finally managed to catch each other tonight. As we didn't need a big, heavy meal... we thought we would catch up over a couple of bottles and nibble on some cheese. Roucou seemed like the perfect enue, and I really wanted another opportunity to check out the many other dishes I didn't get to try yet... especially ones with a Japanese touch.
Foie gras and poppyseed crème brûlée - I had this on my first impromptu visit after a gala dinner, and I was happy to have it again. Tough to resist a foie gras dish like this...
Cherry tomato tart, black olive tapenade, burrata and smoked Hokkaido ricotta - I was initially worried that the tapenade would be too much for Foursheets, but I did not have worried. The cherry tomatoes were really nice, and the smoked ricotta that was shaved on top was interesting.
Organic Camembert fondue, mushrooms, shallots, walnut pickles - the flavors here were bigger than one would expect from Camembert, but I really liked how this was done with the added acidity. The walnut pickles were something I haven't seen before.
Raclette lait cru: shellfish noodle, bamboo shoot, prawns and chilli oil - this was kinda interesting. The shellfish broth definitely had good flavors, and the kick from the chili oil was pretty obvious.
Raclette lait cru: pastrami sandwich, jalapeño, melted Raclette cheese and French fries - I really liked this on my last visit, so it was a no-brainer to order it up again. Cured meat, melted cheese, and a little zing from the pickled jalapeños... great combo.
Mimolette demi vieux: Chicken karaage, Japanese curry rice, shaved Mimolette - Japanese curry rice? Fried chicken? With some punchy Mimolette shaved on top? Sign me up!
I ordered two bottles of wine for us, but unfortunately the white wine still did not make the grade for Foursheets... Sigh...
2019 Le Puy Marie-Cécile - this was riper than expected on the palate, and pretty soft and round. The nose was still kinda on the mineral and flinty side, but we also had tropical fruits and it was a little reductive.
2020 Ginkgo - minty, earthy, mineral and leather nose, with nice notes of black figs, cedar, and oak when it opened up.
This was a fun evening, and I'm glad we had a chance to catch up with Kutsuyama. We're already making plans about the next time we meet up, which will hopefully be soon.
